The Wonder Bags
>> Thursday, October 13, 2011
A couple of years back Kakkengad Farmers Club launched a campaign against the indiscriminate use of plastics, especially plastic carry bags. During the campaign besides creating awareness amongst the people about the evil effects of plastics, cloth bags were distributed free of cost to all households in the panchayat. The pilot project pioneered by NMGB to free the panchayat from the clutches of usurious money lenders lead to organising skill training on tailoring in which 80 poor women were trained with support from NABARD. The club helped the trained women to form Joint Liability Groups and were encouraged to start a group venture with credit support from NMGB for manufacturing "Wonder Bags" a unique type of multi utility foldable cloth bags which can be used for shopping by substituting for the use and throw plastic carry bags which poses a severe threat to the environment. The first such Industrial Unit under the auspicies of the Club started functioning at Kakkengad recently. The unique product, a small purse like bag, which when unzipped turns out to a big bag which could be used for multipurposes including shopping. The unit has also ventured into production of "Shabarimala Kit Bags" a much sought after product which has very high demand in the market. The Club is providing marketing support to the unit.
